AFROGAMOUS(7) Members' Manual AFROGAMOUS(7)

NAME

afrogamous — private mail aliases for a small, invite-only membership.

Members hand out a different @afrogamous.org address to every shop, site and stranger that asks for one. Mail is forwarded to wherever they actually read it. When an address goes bad, it gets switched off and nothing else is affected.

SYNOPSIS

anything@afrogamous.orgthe inbox you already read

One alias per sender. As many aliases as you need. Any of them can be switched off at any time without touching the others.

DESCRIPTION

  1. Make an alias. Pick a name that reminds you who you gave it to: hardware-store@, dentist@, newsletter-17@. Names are first come, first served across the whole membership.
  2. Give it out. Use the alias anywhere you'd normally type your real address. Mail sent to it is forwarded on arrival, still addressed to the alias, so you can always tell who passed your address along.
  3. Switch it off. When an alias starts collecting junk, turn it off and the mail stops reaching you. Your real address was never exposed, so there's nothing else to clean up.

MEMBERSHIP

afrogamous isn't open for public sign-up. New members join by invitation from someone who's already here, and the person who invited you is the first person to ask when you're stuck.

There's no waitlist, no paid tier, and nobody is selling anything. If you don't know a member, this probably isn't for you, and that's fine: plenty of good alias services take sign-ups.

RULES

  • Aliases receive mail. Don't use them to send bulk or unsolicited mail.
  • Don't use aliases to dodge bans, farm free trials or stuff votes.
  • No harassment, threats or impersonation, from an alias or through one.
  • An alias tied to abuse gets switched off. Repeat trouble ends a membership.

REPORTING ABUSE

Got mail from an @afrogamous.org address you didn't want?

Every address on this domain belongs to an individual member. We forward mail to members; we don't run mailing lists and we don't send marketing.

If a message from one of our addresses is spam, a scam or harassment, forward it with full headers to the abuse desk. Every report is read by a person. We don't say who is behind an alias unless the law requires it.

QUESTIONS

How do I get an invite?

Ask a member. Invites aren't sold, raffled or handed to strangers.

Can I choose my own alias names?

Yes, any name that isn't already taken or reserved. Role addresses like abuse@, postmaster@ and admin@ are kept back.

Is there a mailbox I log in to?

No. afrogamous forwards mail; it doesn't host it. Messages go straight on to the inbox you already use.

What happens to mail sent to an alias that's off?

It isn't delivered. That's the whole point.

Why "afrogamous"?

Ask whoever invited you. Everyone tells it differently.
